KZ PR3 vs KZ PRX: KZ's planar IEMs

Reviewed 6 Oct 2026 · Data from KZ’s official spec sheetsFor: Listening to music Recording and mixing at home

KZ has two planar-driver earphones in its catalog: the KZ PR3 and the KZ PRX. They use the same technology, but the PRX is a later generation. This comparison explains what a planar is, what changes between the two and which suits you.

In short

  • PR3: 13.2 mm planar, more sensitive and cheaper.
  • PRX: fourth-generation planar driver, with changes to reduce sibilance and widen the soundstage, according to KZ.
  • Both are 15 Ω but have low sensitivity: they benefit from a source with some power.

What a planar driver is

In a planar driver, the diaphragm is a very thin sheet with the conductor spread across its whole surface, placed between magnets. Because it all moves at once, it distorts less than a dynamic diaphragm and resolves detail better. In exchange, it is usually less sensitive.

What the PRX improves

According to KZ, the PRX brings three changes over the PR3: revised damping to reduce sibilance, an acoustic curve designed to widen the soundstage and a reinforced magnetic circuit to give the sound more body. There are no official measurements comparing the two, so these are the improvements stated by the manufacturer.

Do they need an amplifier?

At 15 Ω they work with a phone, but their sensitivity is low for an IEM (98 dB for the PR3 and 94 dB for the PRX). In practice you will have to turn the volume up more than with a dynamic, and a USB-C dongle or a small amp helps get the most out of them. The PRX is the more demanding of the two.

Frequently asked questions

Does a planar have less bass?

Not necessarily. Planar bass is usually fast and controlled, with less of a thump than a dynamic.

Do they work with Bluetooth adapters?

Yes, they use Pin C. Bear in mind that because of their low sensitivity they will play quieter than other models on the same adapter.

Does KZ have more planars?

In our store, these two. You will find them in the planar IEMs.
